Day 12: Romance in Real Life: How to Eat Like a Heroine

DAY 12-HOW TO EAT LIKE A HEROINE

From man’s bacon obsession to the Chick-Lit Heroine’s addiction to chocolate and Diet Coke, Romance novels and Rom-Coms have established quite a few food tropes. These tropes don’t just tell us what to eat; they tell us how to eat, too. There are the heroines who eat daintily, getting distracted by work or life and forgetting meals entirely. Then there are the heroines who dine with verve and gusto—challenging men and stereotypes simultaneously in a fury of (usually) bad manners. On day 12, April tries to figure out how a romance heroine should eat… but this time we need your help. Which heroine-April do you like best: the Dainty Delicate, Average April, or the Eager Eater? [After you watch the video, share your preference in the poll below. Thank you for your help with this experiment!]

Out for a day of fun, April and I decided we should add a little Romance-in-Real-Life experiment to the mix. As we had lunch, we started to discuss a few of our favorite heroines—Makino Tsukushi from Hana Yori Dango and Geum Jan Di of Boys Over Flowers, Japanese and Korean adaptations of the same manga—who happen to be eager eaters. All in all, it was a fun day, pushing April to eat like Geum Jan Di. Plus, ordering the bizarre deep-fried cheesecake did provide a fun excuse to flirt with our waiter. I personally prefer Average April.
